Understanding our nervous system can make a big difference in how we live our life. It can help us to understand the links between our mind, emotions and physical health and explain anxiety, depression and other issues.
The human body has three main components to the autonomic nervous system, the sympathetic, parasympathetic and enteric. These are the link between our thoughts, feelings, muscles, organs etc
The parasympathetic nervous system controls all of our essential bodily functions without you being consciously aware of any of it. As long as the parasympathetic nervous system is functioning you can continue to live even if you are unconscious. This nervous system allows you to fully and totally relax. It is commonly known as the 'rest and digest, feed and breed', nervous system. It is responsible for sexual arousal and hence why being relaxed, and feeling safe and secure is a key particularly to female sexual arousal.
The sympathetic nervous system is primarily responsible for your fight or flight mechanism. It is your emergency response unit. Any sign of danger and this is the nervous system that comes into action. Your muscles tense, sugar is taken from your organs ready to fuel the response. You contract alert to danger.
The para and sympathetic nervous systems are designed to operate in a cooperative opposition to each other. When one is active the other ought be passive. The sympathetic nervous system counteracts and neutralises our parasympathetic nervous system. Your fight or flight mechanism stops you from fully relaxing.
The enteric nervous system is a complex network of neural transmitters and receptors throughout your gut, throat and digestive system. It is now being called the second brain. This nervous system stores information just as the brain in your head does but it does it throughout your body in particular in your gut.
The memories in the enteric nervous system are triggered when a similar situation presents itself to that which formed the memory. This brain can access a deep knowing or intuition as it doesn't have the frontal cortex to contend with. So when you have a 'gut feeling', you can trust it! Recent research is showing that relaxing and healing this nervous system has a key role to play for humans moving from misery to happiness. Whilst not the topic of duscussion here it is fascinating that the heart also is a thinking organ containing the same grey matter as the brain. New research is revealing that the heart responds first to many stimuli prior to the brain!
The interaction between these three nervous systems is complex and interrelated. The BIG problem is that for most of us living a modern life these nervous systems have become confused. In particular from past trauma stored in your enteric nervous system you live primarily with your sympathetic nervous system activated in a perpetual state of fight or flight. You are ready and expecting danger at all times. Your body is stressed and tense. Rarely do we fully relax. Our bodies are so stressed seeing problems and dangers all around we cannot discern real from imagined dangers. We lose our ability to know is it Ok to fully relax knowing we are supported by life.
The issues at play between these two key nervous systems are further exacerbated in sexual arousal and orgasm. As mentioned previously arousal is achieved by the parasympathetic nervous system being in a state of relaxation. Orgasm is a response of the sympathetic nervous system. And again the problem is that these two get confused in many people. Living in a state of tension can mean premature ejaculation in men and insufficient arousal for women. Held memories of sexual trauma or sexual inadequacy further inhibit the arousal response.
A key task of healing and living from your essence is to heal stored energies or memories in our enteric nervous system. The next step is to totally and fully relax knowing you are supported by your parasympathetic nervous system and knowing your sympathetic nervous system is idle but ready to act if and when real danger, rather than imagined danger, presents itself.
You are purposely designed to live your day to day life fully and totally relaxed down to every last cell of your body. This is your healthy state. It is only in this state that you can truly live free.
