What is Far Infrared
Far infrared (FIR) is a subdivision of the electromagnetic spectrum that has been used globally for centuries and has been extensively researched for its biological effects. Technological advances provide new techniques for delivering FIR energy to the human body. Specialty lamps and FIR saunas, delivering pure FIR have become more safe, extremely effective, and widely used sources to generate its therapeutic effects. Here’s a fantastic journal article about it if you want to read more.
Infrared heat has been used in health and human movement applications for many years. The infrared sauna is different from traditional saunas as it uses infrared lamps to directly heat your body instead of heating the air around you. Saunas with infrared technology (like ours at Nova Holistic Spa) operate at a lower temperature (usually between 120 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit) than traditional saunas, which are typically 150 to 180 degrees Fahrenheit. According to FIR Sauna manufacturers, an infrared sauna heats the air about 20% and heats your body about 80%. With FIR you benefit from a more intense sweat and you can last longer in the sauna which means your body has more time to really sweat out any toxins.
Because it's on a spectrum, infrared has its own range of waves. Based on size, frequency, and energy, there are 3 types of infrared radiation: near (NIR), mid (MIR), and far (FIR). Every infrared ray does something unique for our bodies, and nature.

- Near-infrared light penetrates effectively into the skin, promoting skin renewal, cell health, wound healing, and tissue growth.
- Mid infrared is a longer wavelength that can penetrate deeper into the body’s soft tissue where inflammation occurs. Helps expand blood vessels and increases circulation, so more oxygen can reach injured areas of the body. This reduces pain and speeds the healing process.
- The longest wavelength, far infrared, reaches deepest into the body, where toxins are stored. By raising your core body temperature, FIR stimulates the sweat glands, causing a deep, detoxifying sweat that leaves you feeling refreshed. Besides burning calories, sweating also increases your heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate.
Note: bookings are subject to availability and are for the use of the communal sauna facility only.
